Hence
the West, which is the dominant culture today, sees itself as the
main force in this clash of cultures and is looking to counter any
group that could possibly rival it. The clash of cultures idea is a
way of defining its new enemies and seeing how to deal with them.
Through the impact the global media and the world market
Western civilization is spreading everywhere, not so much as a
military force but as an intellectual, economic and cultural power,
which can still radically challenge and displace existing
cultures and ways of life. The clash of culture idea arises in the
expansion to meet any force that can challenge or oppose this spread
of Western civilization.
The initial great fear is of a battle
between the West and the Islamic world, between Western secularism
and Islamic fundamentalism. Islam has replaced Communism as the
world enemy in the eyes of many people. Certainly all over the
world, the main battles and terrorist activities, regardless of
which side the media sympathizes with, concern Islam - whether in
Israel, Bosnia, Chechnya, Algeria, Sudan, Afghanistan, or Kashmir.
Islamic terrorist and insurgency groups are active in moderate
Islamic countries like Egypt or in countries where Muslims
constitute a sizeable minority, like India or the Philippines. The
so-called terrorist countries of the world according to the United
States State Department - Libya, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Sudan - are
all not surprisingly Islamic countries. World terrorist activity
primarily involves Islamic groups challenging Western supremacy. |
