Similarly,
people of such non-Western religious backgrounds are able to embrace
Western science, technology and economics without having to give up
their cultural and religious backgrounds. Some think that their
religions are more modern or scientific than the Christian religion
of the West. Hindus and Buddhists with their ideas of consciousness
as the supreme reality behind the universe and the age of universe
as many billions of years old, appear much more scientific than
fundamentalist Christians, for example.
Most of this cultural clash need not
be violent, though it will undoubtedly stir various passions and
challenge various prejudices. The only immediate military
confrontation is happening between the West and Islam. This is so
far has consisted of short term and limited struggles between the
West and a few rebel Islamic countries, like the Gulf War with Iraq,
or on the level of isolated terrorist attacks. However, should
terrorism escalate to a nuclear level, which is becoming quite
possible, or should rebel Islamic countries spread their influence
and come to dominate the Islamic world, then a great battle may
occur, though it remains unclear if and how this will develop.
On the other hand, an economic
confrontation is more likely between the West and the Far East,
China and Japan. Islam apart from oil reserves is economically
backward and little threat on this level. It will be interesting to
see what the West might do should East Asia become a real threat to
its global economic dominance. The Far East with its strong group
and work ethics can easily challenge in time the freer but
progressively lazier West. This fear is perhaps what is behind the
American accommodation of China. |
