What
Hindus should become more tolerant of is the truth about different
religions, not some imaginary metaphysical unity. At present Hindus
are unwilling to see the truth about the other religions of the
world. They prefer pleasant fantasy images of universal mysticism
that inhibit them from dealing with the real world in which hostile
religions are converting their own children.
Hindus must accept the fact that many
religions teach something very different than Hinduism and have done
so for centuries. While Hindus should welcome those of other
religious backgrounds who affirm similar values and practices to
Hinduism, particularly forms of mysticism and meditation, they must
recognize that such individuals are a small minority in most
religions.
On the other hand, religions coming
from India, like Buddhism and Jainism, other religions of East Asia,
like Taoism and Shinto, and pagan Native American and African
beliefs are akin to Hinduism. These religions Hindus should not
merely tolerate but dialogue with and seek to support in their
common battle against missionary beliefs. |
