Of
course a Hindu influence can be found in many religions. As the
oldest religion and the main surviving ancient type of religions
such as once dominated the world, Western religions arose out of a
Hindu-like background, though rejecting more than affirming it. The
pre-Christian beliefs of Europe and the pre-Islamic religion of
Arabia, with their different deities and temple worship resemble
Hinduism.
Not surprisingly, most Christians and
Muslims identify Hinduism with the same old paganism and idolatry
that the founders of their religions sought to eradicate. It is true
that some Christian and Islamic mystics with their insistence upon
Divine Oneness and communion with God can resemble Vedanta. But such
an influence is hardly the main force behind these religions that
have developed along different lines.
Christians and Muslims in general are
happy with their religions as they are and don't want them combined
with Hinduism, which they associate with superstition and
polytheism. They regard Hindu ideas of karma and rebirth as
unacceptable, heretical and sometimes even as ridiculous. |
