RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL PRACTICES

Isn't This a Different View Than Yoga in the West?

Yoga in the West has come to emphasize asana or yogic postures, which is just a small and preliminary part of the yogic system as the Western world is very physically oriented. As such it is Hatha Yoga or the Yoga of physical culture that has become most popular. But even traditional Hatha Yoga includes pranayama and meditation, as well as various internal purification practices.

It is a part of Sadhana or spiritual practice and is meant to lead one to Raja Yoga or the deeper meditational practices. However the deeper aspects of Yoga are recognized by many people, even in the West, particularly those who want to go deeper into the tradition.
