These books
give us glimpses of the holy family.
Not only did Shri Ramakrishna giveinitiation to Narendranath who became Vivekananda but
the deep spiritual relationship trained Vivekananda who later fully used his intellect,
his power of argumentation, deep grasp of meri, affairs and thoughts and lastly his
wonderful ability to express him- self on the platform. Verily, the same sayings and
parables of Shri Ramakrishna developed in the hands of Vivekananda into very able and
eloquent advocacy of Vedanta philosophy, reinstatement of Hindu religious beliefs and
evaluation of the rich cultural heritage of India.
Ramakrishna Dev passed away on August 16,1886. A few days before his ascension he called
Narendranath to his presence and fell into a trance after fixing his gaze on hini. It is
said, "Narendra felt as though something like an electric current was flowing into
him,and lost outer conscious- ness. When he came to, he found the master weeping. On being
asked the reason for this, the Master said, "O Naren, today I have given you my all
and have become a pauper! Through this power you will do great things, and only
after that will you return to where you came from."
A couple of days before the end, a curious thought flashed across Narendra's mind, as he
stood at the Master's bedside. "He has said many times that he is an Incarnation of
God. If he can say it now in the throes of death, then I will believe him!" Instantly
the Master turned to him
and summoning all his energy said distinctly, "0 my Naren, are you still riot
convinced? He who was Rama and Krishna is now Ramakrishna-but not in your Vedantic
sense!"X
