During
the early days of his conversion, he resolved to donate a thousand
million gold pieces to the church to carry on its propagandist
activities. For realizing this unearthly hunger for diffusion, he
diverted a major part of the revenue towards it. He scrupulously
accounted for the various items of expenditure incurred in this
connection. Periodical auditing and perpetual vigilance over the
manner of spending were given top priority, and he personally
attended to them with utmost care. When he grew pretty old, to his
great surprise he found that he spent only 960 millions of gold
pieces against the target of 1000, he had fixed. The balance of 40
millions remained unredeemed. After all forty millions! It is
nothing! An insignificant amount!, he concluded.
