ASOKA
AS A PATRON |
|
As
days rolled on, his misery and helplessness grew in inverse
proportion. Once again Asoka called for Radhagupta and demanded,
"Who is the King of the land?" Radhagupta in all humility
replied that his Majesty was the sovereign of the land. This time
the minister was outwitted. "Yes, you spoke the truth. I am the
sovereign of the land and my orders shall be obeyed
implicitly", concluded Asoka without faltering.
Atonce
he came to the most momentous decision of gifting away his whole
Kingdom to the monks, in lieu of forty thousand million pieces which
had remained unpaid. No sooner did he decide thus than he wrote a
gift-deed in his own hand and sealed it without anyone's assistance
and sent it to the monks. His vow was thus redeemed.
