ASOKA AS A PATRON

There was a great change in him. He recovered his composure. Did he regain his Paradise? He felt he was in his teens again and moved about with such agility and gaiety that everyone around him was surprised at the change that came over him.

But it brought in its wake manifold problems. Seeing him thus, and knowing the cause for such a sudden transformation, the ministers and the heir-apparent fluttered and wailed, "How to get back the Kingdom from the monks? Where to get such a huge sum? Whom to approach for a loan? Oh! 40 thousand million pieces! Impossible, impossible, and impossible, when the treasury was drunk to the lees by the sovereign's unearthly religious thirst?"
