ASOKA
AS A PATRON |
|
The young prince, finding the accusation
genuine sent for the treasurer and bade him not to comply with the
request of his good old grandfather. The treasurer bowed to the
royal injunction.
The
old king was thus made helpless. His tottering age had sapped his
strength already and with it had gone his royal powers too. So he
lamented at the sad turn of events. "Any how debt is debt and
it must be paid to the last pie. None can restrain me from doing the
legitimate? Should I be branded as liar? What would the world think
of me, if I do not keep up my word?" Asoka grumbled. He started
sending whatever that his hands would lay upon in his chamber and
kitchen. Gold plates, Silver utensils, iron vessels--furnishing the
tables and halls gradually disappeared.
