ASOKA
AS A PATRON |
|
"Who
could help me now? How could I redeem the vow? Shall not the world
brand me an imposter for the lapse?", he sat musing one day at
the table, looking at the earthenware vessels. The food became
unpalatable and life, tasteless. He thought to pay off the debt by
instalments atleast, however little the sum, or longer the period
might be. So he sent a half-eaten amalaka fruit to the monks at
Kukkutarama monastery, appealing to them most humbly to be satisfied
with it for the time being, as nothing was left with him to offer
than that half-eaten nut. And it might be his last gift, he ended.
Most miserable! It is too deep for tears too!
