ASOKA
AS A PATRON |
|
To
redeem the vow before his death, he began sending huge quantities of
gold and silver to Kukkutarama monastery at Pataliputra. The
treasurer and the ministers found this extravagance unbearable; nor
was his dotage reasonable, judged by any standard. They thought that
this unusual drain on the treasury must be stopped, lest the
constructive national programmes and economic developments might
either forcibly be stopped, or gracefully withdrawn mid-way. They
discussed and despaired. At last, the ministers made bold and
acquainted Sampadi, Kunala's son--the heir-apparent, with the real
position of the economic crises and future disaster, if it were to
be continued unabated.
