ASOKA AS A PATRON

To redeem the vow before his death, he began sending huge quantities of gold and silver to Kukkutarama monastery at Pataliputra. The treasurer and the ministers found this extravagance unbearable; nor was his dotage reasonable, judged by any standard. They thought that this unusual drain on the treasury must be stopped, lest the constructive national programmes and economic developments might either forcibly be stopped, or gracefully withdrawn mid-way. They discussed and despaired. At last, the ministers made bold and acquainted Sampadi, Kunala's son--the heir-apparent, with the real position of the economic crises and future disaster, if it were to be continued unabated.
