This colossal
Gomateswara statue facing the North arrests the attention of the beholders by
its majesty, serenity and dignity exuding from every one of its three
dimensional august shape. The Saravana tank below the hill is equally famous
and is held in high esteem by the Jains. Though a reputed lain pilgrimate
centre, it is equally drawing other religions all through the year. Among the
festivals celebrated here, the Maha Mastakabhishek - head anointing ceremony
takes precedence over others. And it is performed once in 12 years with
enthusiasm and zeal that consume millions of rupees. The milk, honey, sandal
water, gold and silver coins poured over its head alone cross some lakhs in
worth. As the occasion is considered very holy, leading Jains living all over
the globe throng this little town and make it heaven. A grand occasion, when
festivity and religiosity reach the zenith.
It lies near
Holenarsipur in Hassan district of Karnataka on the way to Belur from Bangalore
and is about 100 Km. from Belur.
