Amaravathi
- a holy thirtha kshetra, situated on the bank of river Krishna has
several uniques to its credit that makes the godminded persons
hasten for instant visitation soon after listening to the narration
of its glorious past. The temple is dedicated to Lord Siva and it is
here only the unique 15-foot high white linga is adored in the
world. It is one of the eighteen famous Saktipithas, where Mother
Parvathi is worshipped as Bala Chamundika Devi. It is for offering
jalabhishek to this archamurti, the river Krishna changed its normal
West to East course and is now flowing from North to South. It is
here the first ancient Andhra University was established that taught
ancient lore to the students of far-off China and other countries.
It is here we see the renowned Bouddha stupa displaying superb
craftsmanship. And finally it is one of the Pancharamas built on the
Chounchaparvatha, where one of the 5 pieces of Siva linga, encased
in the neck chain of Tarakasura fell, when Lord Subrahmanya hit that
awful demon with his potent spear. It abounds in many marvels and
was patronized by devout rulers like Satavahanas, Vijayanagar kings,
Raja Sri Vasireddi Venkataswami Naidu etc. It can be reached by bus
and launch also.
