HOW THE RAMAYANA WAS BORN

ONE fine morning the celestial bard Narada came to Rishi Valmiki's ashrama.

Valmiki welcomed him, washed his feet respectfully and offered him fruits and milk.

After seating him, Valmiki asked Narada, "O all-knowing Saint, can you tell me who, among the heroes of today, is brave, dutiful, grateful, truthful, firm, virtuous, kind, learned, competent, sweet, graceful, has subdued his heart, controlled his anger, is intelligent, without malice and formidable even for gods? I am curious to know if there is one who has all these qualities."

Narada, the all-knowing said, "These qualities are rare and rarer still for one man to possess all. Yet I know of one who  has all these qualities. He is Rama, king of Ayodhya!"
