HOW THE RAMAYANA WAS BORN

In those days rishis wore clothes woven out of the smooth barks of trees.

Tucking the bark-cloth in his arm-pit the rishi walked a few steps along the river-bank.

Green grass covered the path like a thick carpet.

Birds chirped joyously from inside the foliage of trees.

The rishi was attracted by a pair of sweet calls.

He looked up in the direction from which they came. He saw a pair of Krauncha birds seated on the branch of a tree, engaged in love-play.
