THE UNITY OF THE VEDIC AND
SHAIVITE RELIGIONS |
Indra is the
destroyer of cities, Purandara: Shiva is the destroyer of the three cities, Tripurahara.
We should note that because of Indra's role as destroyer of cities, there has been an
attempt to make him into a deity of invading nomadic people, smashing the cities of the
indigenous Dravidians (current evidence, however, does not show the destruction of any
city in the Harappan civilization by outside invaders). In any case by the same logic
Shiva must also be a deity of invading nomadic people, not of indigenous city dwellers. In
fact in Puranic literature Shiva destroys the cities for the benefit of Indra.
Indra and Shiva both have a consort named power (Shakti in the case of Shiva, Shachi in
the case of Indra), who herself is a fierce Goddess. Indra's consort
Indrani is in fact the Goddess of the army in the Vedic tradition. The martial role of
Shiva's consort as Durga of Chandi, the destroyer of all enemies and opposition, and the
leader of the Divine army is well known. |
