At the same
time various leftists, semi-war lords and gangsters have been projected as national
leaders like Jyoti Basu, Laloo Prasad Yadav or Mulayam Singh, completely ignoring the
great tradition of leadership in the country and making a mockery of the nation. To
counter such negative role models the other great leaders of modern India must be
recognized and their policies examined and followed. Such are Tilak, Aurobindo, Savarkar,
Hedgewar, Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Swami Rama Tirtha, and Swami Vivekananda, to mention
a few.
Perhaps Aurobindo provides the best model for Western educated Indians because he left
such a clear literature in the English language on all aspects of human life. However, all
the great leaders of modern and ancient India should be recognized, which is not to mean
that all were perfect or that their policies need not be adjusted to present
circumstances.
Similarly the older role models of the country must be
brought out like Ranjit Singh, Shivaji, Akbar, Sri Harsha, Vikramaditya, Ashoka,
Chandragupta, Yudhishthira and Rama. Clearly there is a great tradition of political and
military leaders to draw upon for present day inspiration. The example of their spiritual
advisors from Krishna to Samartha Ramdas should not be forgotten either. Linking to such
leaders is bound to vitalize the character of the people and call opportunistic
politicians into question. |
