So-called
Hindu-Muslim tolerance was mainly a one way street. While Hindus
would sometimes worship at the graves of great Sufis (that were
often erected on the sites of Hindu temples), Muslims would never
worship at Hindu temples where images or idols were used. In this
way Hindu tolerance and love of saints was exploited in order to
draw them into Islam. In other words Sufis were tolerant of Hindus
in so far as Hindus were honoring them and they used this to promote
conversion.
The same Sufis did not stand between Muslim armies and the Hindus
when the Hindus were being slaughtered. In
fact Sufi tolerance does not even extend to all Islamic sects. Most
Sufis not only don't accept all other religions and reject Hinduism
as polytheism; they don't accept all Islamic sects. Most Sufis, as
strict Sunnis are opposed to the Shias, Ahmadiyas and other
non-Sunni groups, sometimes promoting military action against them
as well.
Sufis have been strong opponents of
the Shias and often criticize them. Recently when the head of the
Naqshbandis, the largest Sufi order, was in Canada his spokesmen
gave many statements that were critical of the Shias. Even so-called
liberal Sufi orders like the Chishtis will not be found praising the
Shias. |
