Should One Formally Become a
Hindu?
As a universal approach, the
teachings of the Hindu tradition do not require that one have any
particular outer religious affiliation but only that we live a
truthful life. One does not have to formally become a Hindu to
receive the inner teachings of Yoga and meditation. All that we need
is a sincere aspiration to discover God or Truth.
However, it can be very
helpful to formally become a Hindu because it provides one a formal
connection to the world's oldest continually existing enlightenment
tradition. It brings one into the family of the rishis and yogis and
connects us directly with their grace and guidance.
We grow in life
relative to the associations we make. To enter into an association
with the sages is the best thing, and to do so with a tradition that
embraces spiritual knowledge of all types can only be helpful. But
we must put these teachings into practice for this association to be
really meaningful.
