DHARMIC PHILOSOPHIES : THEORIES
OF TRUTH |
|
In this regard
it should be remembered that all these teachings hold that truth transcends conceptual
thought and can only be realized when we are free of all the biases, opinions and
preconceptions of the mind. It appears that the holy wars which were fought in Europe and
the Middle East on the battlefield were fought in the philosophical arena in more tolerant
and more intellectual medieval India.
The orthodox or Vedic philosophies are six.
-
Sankhya
-
Yoga
-
Vedanta
-
Mimamsa
-
Nyaya and
-
Vaisheshika.
Each has its founder and its key text. Sankhya comes from the sage Kapila, though it is
based on the SANKHYA KARIKA of Ishwara Krishna (a different figure than Krishna of the
Gita), as no works of Kapila remain. Yoga is based on the YOGA SUTRAS of Patanjali.
Vedanta is based on the BRAHMA SUTRAS of Badarayana. Mimamsa is based upon the MIMAMSA
SUTRAS of Jaimini.
