Introduction Ages ago, Suchindram, a noted pilgrim centre of the south, was a dense forest
known as Jnanaranya. Many ascetics are said to have had their abode there and obtained
salvation through meditation. Hence the name Jnanaranya. Once upon a time, Atri Maharshi
with his wife, Anasuya, lived in the forest to perform penance and meditation. Anasuya was
the embodiment of chastity and considered her husband as God incarnate on earth. Getting
up early in the morning, and after bath in the holy streams. Anasuya made earthen vessels
by the power of her chastity and brought Ganga in it. With that she conducted her daily
worship at the feet of her lord. It happened that for a number of year-, there was no
rain. Atri Maharshi arranged to perform a Yajna to invoke the Rain God to bless the land.
