SUCHINDRAM

Till some years ago an accused used to be made to dip his hand in boiling ghee after undergoing a fast, and if he came out unhurt, without blisters, on the third day, he was declared innocent and was acquitted of the guilt. Otherwise, his guilt was considered to have been proved and he was socially outcast.

This elaborate ceremony was performed by Yogakkars at Udayamartanda Mandapam. Suchindram is called by a third name too, namely Tanumalayan Koil, which means that it is the shrine of the Trinity, viz., Siva, Vishnu and Brahma [Tanu (Sthanu) --Siva; Mal --Vishnu; and Ayan - Brahma]. The three main festivals are the Margazhi Utsava in December January, the Chaitra Utsava in April and May and the Avani Utsava in September and October. There are about 30 shrines in the temple.
