The features of
Siva are so excellent that it is a sculptural marvel as if the sculptor perfectly imagined
his design and poured forth his life’s blood into every stroke of his chisel to bring
out a life-like statue. On the left side of the same pillar, the wife of the Rishi of
Darukavana is seen dropping alms into the bowl with a spoon.
At the corresponding pillar of the Chitra Sabha entrance is the carving of the figure of
Lord Krishna with his flute in hand, and one feels, as if the eternal tune is still
ringing. On the left of the pillar is the carving of a Kadamba tree on the banks of a tank
where the Gopis of Vrindavan had gone to take their bath. They kept their clothes on the
banks and went naked into the tank for the dip. Krishna, as a boy in a sportive mood, took
away their raiment’s and hung them on the branches of the tree. A nude picture
of a Gopi in this predicament is shown in vivid glory of the physical features, and
another in an attempt to recover the clothings, going up the tree to implore Krishna to
return the same. |
