| At Tirukkadaiyur,
immediately on sowing the seeds, the Vilva trees grew like a forest. Then the Lord
appeared and imparted wisdom. So the Lord is known as Vilvavaneswarar and this place is
also known as Vilvavanam or forest of vilvam. It is said that at this place the Lord granted Santana Bhagyam (fortune of having a son) to Mrikandu Maharshi after his long penance, and Markandeya was born Markandeya used to worship God by bathing at the Ganges at Banaras and bringing the water for abhishekam to the Lord. Banaras being far away, an underground passage was created from the temple to the Ganges.
