TIRUKKADAIYUR

So this place is also known as Pinjilavanam. Even to this day the abhishekam to the Lord is done with the water from a well situated at a distance of half a mile from the temple. It is said that it is the same water, which had been stored from the day it was received by Markan- deya. Even if the water is brought from Banaras, it will not be used here. In
commemoration of this, during the month of Phalguni (March-April) a festival is observed, when the image of Markandeya is carried in procession to the well.

At the time when Markandeya was to die he was clasping the Sivalingam of Tirukkadaiyur. Yama threw the noose for catching hold of Markandeya, which encircled the Sivalingam also. Siva got annoyed, and assuming the Samhara- swarupam with trident in hand,
killed Yama.
