GURU DATTATREYA OF GANAGAPUR

SHRI SHRIPADA SHRIVALLABHA

According to Gurucharita, on a certain occasion, Dattatreya during his morning bikshatana-begging for Madhukari happened to go to a house where Shraddha was being performed. The lady of the house finding divinity in the supplicant gave biksha ignoring the custom forbading the giving of anything to anyone till the feeding of brahmins after all the ritualistic offerings made to the departed. Pleased with her compassion, Dattatreya blessed her with the boon of a son as great as God, as she implored while giving biksha. In due course she gave birth to a son and was called Shripad. And he was another incarnation of Dattatreya which fact came to light when he recited all the vedas at the thread ceremony that inaugurated the vidyabhyasa. He demonstrated his superhuman powers on many occasions. When he was asked to marry, he refused saying that he was already wedded to yoga.
