Tirumogoor
- Kalamegha Perumal Temple
This
is yet another renowned Vaishnava kshetra lying near Madurai, renowned as Saiva
thirtha kshetra par excellence. Its pouranic glory dates back to the time of
Ksheerasagaramadana, when Srimannarayana metamorphosed himself into an
enchanting belle of unparalleled glamour that beguiled the witless danavas into
drinking in the hypnotic charms of Jaganmohini with their eyes instead of
nectar, for which they toiled hard and long. The Moolavar is called Kalamegha
Perumal and is abiding in this kshetra at the earnest entreaty of the devas,
since that Mahatkarya. On account of this, the sacroscant place is called
Mohanputa or Maigoor signifying that dramatic episode. This Lord emancipated
Brahma, Devendra and Rudra, and is known for his abundant Vatsalya and easily
accessible disposition. Among the noted Alwars, Nammalwar and Tirumangai Alwar
composed Mangalasasanams and expressed their appreciation of the Lord's
inimitable act that made devas immortal and free from the atrocities of their
own cousins - danavas. The Lord's archamurti sculptured in captivating form
detains the visitors and lifts their hands unknown to themselves. The icon of
Meghavalli Natchiar is quite tantalizing due to excellent craftsmanship. It is
built in Dravidian style of architectural design and is majestic in all its
component parts. The Ketaka vimana on the garbhagriha is worth-seeing. Agamic
worship is offered with great devotional fervor and the annual car festival
celebrated in Vaisakha lures huge crowds making this kshetra into Bhuloka
Vaikunta.
It
is 10 km off Madurai, the famous temple city of Tamilnadu, and accessible by
four wheelers.
