- Vanamamalai Perumal Temple
This is one among the ashta swayamvyakta kshetras lying on the banks of
Tamraparani river. It is familiar as Vanamamalai kshetra and alsd nick named
Totadri. Several divinities such as Devendra, Brahma, Romasa Maharishi, Brighu
Maharshi and Markandeya visited and prayed to this Lord soulfully and were
blessed magnificently. The image of archamurti Vanamamalai Perumal is in sitting
posture and facing east.
He
is attended by Sridevi, Bhudevi, Niladevi along with Garuda and Senai Mudaliar.
Icons of Moon-God and Sun-God too are also adorning the garbhagriha, in addition
to two charming figures with Chamaras in their hands. The moment the devotees
enter the sannidhi, they feel enraptured by the huge assemblage of the highest
divinities and their enchanting features and gestures. The temple is a very big
one, built in strict accordance with Silpa sastra and the garbha griha is
adorned with Nandavarthana Vimana. The temple has two tanks called Senthamarai
pushkarini and Nanda pushkarini. As it is a famous kshetra, many religious
institutions are striving for the propogation of bhakti cult. Among them
Vanamamalai Jeer Mutt deserves reverent mention. Nammalwar visited and eulogized
the glory of the Presiding deity with his Pasuramala. Daily Agamic puja is
offered and the annual festivals are conducted with great pomp and splendour.
The deity is given tailabhishek everyday as a curative measure due to the fact
that when the image was lifted from hidden place, some bruises made on the body
of the Lord. Hence regular gingely oil bath. This kshetra is popularly known by
another names like Nankuneri or Vanamamalai. On account of the presence of Tayar
Varamangai, this is very familiar as Varamangai kshetra. It commands lodging and
boarding facilities.
It
is a rail head and it can be reached from Tirunelveli by bus and hence enjoys
all conveyance facilities.
