"Where the masculine gender is used, there Visnu is indicated; where words occur in the feminine gender, there devata is what is indicated; where words are in the neuter gender, there
Brahman is the denotation."

What are referred to, in the personalistic manner, by names cast in the masculine and feminine genders, are not, however, different from the neuter
Brahman. In truth, the non-dual Reality has no gender; it is beyond the reach of words.
If the neuter is preferred in regard to Brahman, it is only to indicate that Brahman, is super-personal Reality transcending subject-object distinction. In the case of the supreme
Brahman there is no question of ascribing to it attributes, actions, etc., and so, no word-function can relate to it. Words are primarily applicable to saguna
Brahman; but by implication, words may be of help in indicating the nature of
nirguna.11
