VISNU
SAHASRA-NAMA-II |
|
Visnu is invested with a form, as all aspect of the Godhead are, in order to facilitate worship and meditation. The Visnu-form is essentially human and more than human too. Image-making is inherent in the nature of man. He cannot help fashioning his conception of God after his own manner. Anthropomorphism, in this sense, is inevitable. The path of the
unman fest is difficult to follow for those who are attached to their bodies declares the teacher of the
Bhagavad-Gita (xii, 5):
avyakta hi gatir-duhkham
dehavadbhir-avapyate
Therefore, aspirants have to be drawn to this path by gradual stages: and worship of and meditation on, the Formed Godhead
(murti-puja and murti-dhyana) constitute important disciplines in this context.
The image of Visnu is such that it easily fascinates and absorbs the mind and heart of the worshipper. Visnu has a form that is beautiful, as He possesses transcendental glory
(sundarah, 791); He is charming, being the infinite bliss
(manoharah , 461); He has a fine face
(sumukhah, 456), of such fascinating beauty that it is comparable to the inside of a lotus whose
color is red (svasyah, 844); His eyes are charming
(sulocanah, 794) like lotuses
(aravindaksah, 347); well formed
(svaksah, 615), with auspicious looks
(subheksanah, 393), that are good
(sudarsanah, 417); He has beautiful voice
(sughosah, 458); His limbs are fine
(subhangah, 586, 782), well-shaped
(svangah, 616) and golden in
color (hemangah, 738); He has fine arms
(subhujah 265), and is of golden hue
(suvarna-varnah, 737). |
