Once this is borne in mind, the unity of the denotation of the various names,
in spite of diversity in connotation, will become clear. The cumulative significance of the one-thousand names is that the Godhead which is inexhaustible in excellence and
splendor is one. Godhead does not become different simply because it is assigned different names.
I have already discussed in different contexts, the signification of some of the names in the Visnu-sahasranama. I shall now proceed to consider some selected names under various categories. First come the names of Visnu -Visnu in the sense in which the
Agamas and the
Puranas speak of Him. In the
Amarakosa, the following forty-six names of Visnu are given:
visnuh-narayanah krsno
vaikuntho vistarasravah
damodaro hrsikesah
kesah madhavah svabhuh
daityarih pundarikakso
govindo garudadhvajah,
pitambaro' cyutah sarngo
visvakseno janardanah.
upendra indravarajas
