purana puruso yajna
Puruso narakantakah,
jalasayi visvarupo
mukundo muramardanah.
In the
Visnu-sahasranama, most of these names are to be found exactly in the same form, and the others are either slightly modified or have their synonyms. The name
visnuh occurs thrice (2, 258, and 657). To the question whether it is proper to repeat the same name, the answer would be that when a name is repeated it has a different meaning, or at least a different shade of meaning.
The term visnuh means 'the all-pervading Being', 'that which is not conditioned by space, time, and things; 'He who traverses this universe by three steps'; 'He whose radiance pervades the firmament and transcends it'. The name
narayanah (245) signifies: 'He who pervades all the appearances, ether, -etc.; 'He abides in them, and they abide in Him! Sri Sankara cites here a verse from the
Sri-Narasimha-Purana which declares:
"Obeisance to Narayana: this is the real mantra that destroys the deadly poison of samsara. This I proclaim very loudly with uplifted hands; let L ascetics with passions subdued and minds lucid listen to me". |
