Visnu is endowed with four hands
(caturbhujah, 140; caturbhahuh, 766); He bears in His hands four appurtenances, conch
(sankha), discus
(cakra), club
(gada), and lotus
(padma) and hence the following names:
Sankhabhrt, He who holds the conch in one hand (993); the name of the conch is
pancajanya, which
symbolizes the principle of egoity which is the cause of the elements
(bhutady- ahankaratmakam); cakri, He who bears the discus in one hand (995), the discus which is named
sudarsana stands for the principle of
manas; or the name may mean that 'He is the ordainer of the revolution of the wheel of
samsara; or that He bears the discus in order to protect the universe' (908);
gadadharah, He who carries the club called
kaumodaki (997) in one hand; the club represents the principle of intellect
(buddhi);12
padmi, He who holds the lotus in one hand (344).
Visnu also wields the bow named
sarnga (sarnga-dhanva, 996); the bow stands for the senses and
ahankara.
