Until
Christianity and Islam give up their conversion efforts stop their
anti-Hindu propaganda (which is part of an anti-idolatry, anti-pagan
propaganda), Hindus must be careful about honoring them. One must be
careful embracing an enemy who is armed and poised to strike,
particularly when one is not armed oneself! Hindu tolerance has been
used by non-Hindus to disarm Hindus, not for them to become tolerant
in return.
While Hindus should encourage genuine tolerance they should not
pretend that it exists where it is not, but rather challenge the
intolerance of exclusive beliefs so that these cannot hide under a
mask of pseudo-tolerance. Accepting
all religions as equally true and valid has had a demoralizing
effect upon Hindus. It makes them believe that there is nothing
special about their religion. If it does not matter if one goes to a
church, mosque or temple as long as it is a place of worship then
the temple loses its importance.
If it makes no difference if one
honors a Christ, Mohammed, Buddha or Krishna, as long as he is a
reputed holy person, then Hindu teachers lose their identity. If
Hindus believe that their religion is no better than any other then
they both lose respect for it and fail to look at other religions in
a critical way. On the other hand, Muslims and Christians are taught
to believe that their religion is special and not just one among
many. Whether this is true or not such a sense of distinction about
their religion increases their faith and conviction and makes them
pursue their religion with more diligence. |
