Hinduism is the largest non-missionary religion in the world. It
is the religion that has best preserved itself against the
missionary onslaught, having held back both Islam and Christianity,
which have attacked it with military, economic and religious force
for centuries.
In this regard Hinduism fared better than Buddhism. Islam
eliminated nearly all traces of Buddhism from Central Asia where it
was strong in the pre-Islamic era. The main parts of India where
Islam spread like Sind and Bengal had strong Buddhist communities as
well, which were not able to preserve themselves. Similarly Buddhist
countries in Asia like Korea and Taiwan are quickly becoming
Christianized.
China did halt the spread of both Islam and Christianity but not
so much by its Buddhist background, which was never complete, but
because of its great history of national pride and strong armies.
The same could be said to be true of Japan. Meanwhile Buddhist
countries like China and Vietnam were easily overcome by communism
and have yet to recover from that influence. India, though coming
under the domination intellectually of Marxism, managed to save
itself from being ruled by that dogma as well.
