HINDUISM
UNDER SIEGE AND RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE |
|
Colonial
governments were not forces of religious tolerance but forces of
religious oppression. The new pleas by the former colonial powers
for religious tolerance in their former colonies are to protect
their Christian missions and their Christian converts against any
backlash - which would not be entirely unjust much less unexpected
under the circumstances - from the original or majority religions of
these regions.
Missionary groups have learned to use the liberal laws of the
post-colonial era to continue their actions, particularly in regions
of the former colonial world where native religions do not have the
financial power to resist them. In addition Western economic might
and media force has given Western missionary religions a method of
penetration into new areas and new tools of expansion that may
render the old military methods unnecessary.
Christian use of the media is particularly strong, like the many
special Christian channels in the United States that promote
evangelical movements and extensive foreign missionary work. The case
with Islam is more dramatic. The media in most Islamic countries is
entirely Islamic and used for religious propaganda purposes. Islamic
countries enforce or emphasize Islamic law according to which no
Muslim can convert to another religion on penalty of death. No
non-Islamic missionary activity is allowed and is against the law. |
