SOCIAL SCIENCE : THE SPIRITUAL BASIS OF CULTURE |
|
The Vedic Social Order
The ancient culture of India was based upon such a system of social diversification according to
spiritual development. It was consciously formed along those lines many thousands of years ago.
Though we see it only in the distance today, we can still ascertain its relevance if we
examine it deeply. It may again become a model for the future.
The founder of this ancient Hindu or Aryan society, the culture of spiritual humanity, was called
"Manu", from whose name the term man arises. He is the Vedic Noah, the great leader who survived the
mythical flood and established the new social order, reflecting a return
to spiritual values from an earlier and materialistic humanity that had
fallen from its spiritual foundation, which somewhat like our society
today, had violated the laws of God and Nature and brought down its own destruction thereby.
Manu recognized four orders of society based upon the four main goals of human beings and
established society accordingly. These four groups were the Brahmins, the priests or spiritual
class; the Kshatriya, the nobility or ruling class; the Vaishya, the
merchants and farmers; and the Shudras or servants.
