CHAMBA

A description of the temples of Brahmaur has been summarized as follows :

"These ancient edifices are grouped together in a distinct compound well known and held high in faith and esteem as the Chaurasi or Churasi. According to legend, shortly after the accession of Sahil Varma, the ruler of Brahmapura(Brahmaur) , eighty- four yogies visited the place. They were greatly pleased with the raja's piety and hospitality, and stayed there for a considerable time, rewarding the raja with the birth of a son, as an heir, followed by nine more sons and a daughter. It is this daughter, named Champavati, who, as has been mentioned earlier, is said, according to one version, to have lent Chamba its name which is originally believed to have been Champa. It is in commemoration of this visit by these eighty-four yogis that the temple arena is believed to have been called chaurasi.
