THE
TEMPLE COMPLEX
Adjacent
to this lies the imposing shrine dedicated to Lord Virupaksha, whose invisible
presence gave an inexhaustible sustenance to the empire throughout. It has a
massive prakara pierced by tall towers, the eastern eleven storeyed majestic
gopuram is the tallest and called the Galigopuram, actually touches the
Vayumandala penetrating through the stately clouds. The sculptural
marvels adorning the ceiling and walls detain both the laymen and connoisseurs
alike for hours, if their aesthetic impulses are in sound condition. Here
vastness and awe inspiring hallowed splendour greet the eyes and feast the soul
with its sublimity. No wonder, its sanctity drew an unending influx of devotees
since its inception in the dim past, prior to the establishment of Vijayanagar
empire to be precise, and is occupying pride of place among the centuries old
temples of Punya Bharat. The Siva linga is quite imposing, and regality seems
emerging from every frame of its architectural beauty. Ramaswamy temple and
Vijaya Vittala Swamy temple lie on the bank in the north east direction. As each
embodies Vijayanagara style of architecture and sculptural adornments, they lure
and bless the visitors.
