Ardent devotees take a trip to
this spot consecrated by that famous Sabarimata, who hosted Sri Rama and served
him in a strange but significant way of biting every fruit offered to know its
eat-worthiness before giving to that great Lord, who relished though commoners
deem it sacrilege and impious. There are very many localities mentioned in the
Ramayana are found in the vicinity
of the famous temple. Along with the Pampa Sarovara there lie many, like
Matangaparvata with its hallowed cave treasured up the jewels of Mother Sita
etc. There is a belief current that the huge boulders found in copious profusion
are the remnants of the huge stones piled up by Hanuma for the purpose of
Sethubandana.
A
visit to all these sacred places not only illuminates but emancipates the
visitors. Scriptures elaborately deal with the glory of this thirthakshetra and
ordain several injunctions for reaping the full merits of yatra. Every yatri
must necessarily offer hair, as it is done in Tirumala in addition to observing
fast. It is a must and an indispensable necessity, since returning home without
tonsure and fast, one carries home the bundle of sins which accumulate with
interest.
