LORD VIRUPAKSHA OF HAMPI

Some of the foreigners in their ecstatic raptures at the magnificence pervading the land wrote chronicles that immortalized the glory of the Vijayanagara empire, covering then the whole of Dhakshinapatha. Hence it boasted of its uniques galore and that in fact boosted its image to spectacular eminence.It is this place sanctified by Sri Rama in the Tretayuga, when he dwelt along with Lakshmana on the Prasravana Hills after killing Vali and making Surgriva the king of Kishkinda, identified with Anegundi; it is here in the vicinity, Mother Sita's jewels were found by Sugriva that forged his alligance with Sri Rama; it is in this region Hanuman found Sri Rama first; it is in this sacred land Sabari lived and hosted Sri Rama during his search for Mother Sita; it is this place, where Pampadevi daughter of Brahma propitiated Lord Visvesvara, who pleased with her penance made her his consort as wished; it is the sublimity of this place that attracted Vidyaranya to do meditation; it is this place placed on line with Badari, Benaras, Prayaga in the Puranas, and hence everything here and in its proximity points to its glorious antiquity and pious sublimity and so it was held in high veneration.
