ON MOTHER AND MOTHERLAND

Section Four: FELLOW-FEELING

At this stage one may tend to think, or ask "What is land'?" Now could one serve one's solid, dead land? What does one's country expect from him? A thought-provoking question, indeed! Land is nothing but an irregularly shaped, non-living, insentient, soulless speck of soil of the limitless universe. Of course, it is true externally, but going deep, one finds a greater connotation of the word 'land'.

In clear cut, unambiguous and unmistakable words great seers defined it long back. They proclaimed with full throated graceful voice - "Not a clod of earth shall country make, but men with flesh and blood". People of the land are thus equated with the land they live in. It is how the motherland is defined, shaped and emerged as a sacred object worthy of devotion.

People represent the land they are born in. Love of the country means love of its people. So, if you love them, respect them and serve them, they in turn stand shoulder to shoulder to support you in all your nation-building projects. Your selfless lead will be taken up with boundless enthusiasm worthy of the cause. If you place your country first, and 'self' next, they give their 'life' first, and seek their welfare next. Don't they know that their well-being is bound up with the well-being of the generality of the public among which every one takes his/her seat? They are aware of it and its import too.
