Tiruvelukkai
- Narasimhaswamy Temple
Kanchipuram claims the special honour of a premier temple city, declaring
proudly the oneness of Siva and Vishnu, through several places of worship of
eternal significance for Siva and Vishnu. Siva Kanchi and Vishnu Kanchi.and
their surroundings are treasuring up numerous temples built for all kinds of
gods and goddesses. Among them, the Narasimhaswamy temple at Tiruvelukkai
occupies a covetable place and beckons the attention of Narasimhopasakas in
particular.
The
temple is an ancient, well-built, independent temple possessing all the parts
including two Pushkarinis with great legends. It has a tall impressive tower
surmounting the broad Mahadwara. According to Sthalapurana, this lord was
abiding in a cave absorbed in meditation going by the name of Yoga Narasimha,
and when the unendurable hardships perpetrated by an asurabadha mounted high,
the then citizen played to this lord tearfully to free them from the demon.
Being omni benevolent, he rushed out of his abode, leaving his dhyana and
defeated and drove out the blood thirsty demon. His Vugrarupa and undaunted
perseverance sent chills in the cruel demons and many died like flies at his
sight itself. On completion of Jagatkalyana, he chose to stay here. The
Mulavirat in standing posture gives darsan and grants sure abhayam, if soulful
prayers are offered. A charming icon of Mother Mahalakshmi is installed next to
him and she is popular as Amrutavalli Thayaru and Velukkaivalli 1fhayar. The two
temple tanks called Kanaka and Hema are very sacred and devotees invariably
bathe in them before entering the sanctum. Daily agamic puja is offered with
great zeal and annual festivals draw huge crowds. Paey Alwar and Tirumangai
Alwar offered Martgalasasan on their visit.
It
lies just one km off Kanchi Municipal bounds in the district of, same name of
Tamil Nadu and accessible by bus.
