Tirukkadalmallai
- Sthalasayana Perumal Temple
Vicinity
to Madras and round the clock availability of several conveyance facilities have
catapulted the glory of Mahabalipuram -the veritable treasure house of Pallava
architectural sculpture. Alas! it eclipsed the much-hallowed Divya Desam
dedicated to Sthalasayana Perumal. Visitors, mostly aliens and a major chunk of
sophisticated Indians too are satisfied with seeing the Pancharathas in ruins
etc, but never visit this Vaishnava temple enshrining Lord Mahavishnu's
recumbent form on Adiseaha, recorded in Puranas as Sthalasayana Perumal. It is
built in Sravidian architectural style with Gaganaakriti Vimana over garbha
griha. The Lord is facing east and blessed Pundarika maharishi on ardent
prayers. The Mother is called Nilamangai Thayar. The Pushkarini goes by the name
of Garuda thu-tha. Though denied, steady streams of devout bhaktas,
nithyanaimithika worship is offered with great religious fervor. Pudhathalwar
and Tirumangai Alwar offered elaborate Mangalasasans to the Lord on their visit.
It
lies about 25 km off Madras and can be reached by all kinds of vehicles and from
Chengalpet too.
