As detailed above
on the basis of the Jnanabindu Upanishad, the life span of the earth comes to 432 million
years. Prof. Rachael in 1921 fixed the date of creation of the earth at 1000 to 8000
million years. According to the Scientific American 1923, the age of the present earth was
calculated after discussion at 500 million years.
Dr. John H. Reynolds, a physicist of the University of California, announced that a
meteorite, which fell near Richardton, North Dakota, 41 years ago, had yielded evidence
which indicated that the age of the solar system is 4950 million years. He said that this
age was fixed by determining the amount of radioactive gas, Xenon-129, in the meteorite.
He added that the sample contained more of this rare gas than any natural substance
previously studied. The gas came from the radioactive decay of iodine-129. His figures
agree generally with those of geologists and other scientists who have estimated the age
of the solar system at 5,000 million years. |
