Meera's
devotional songs in praise of Giridhara Gopala (Krishna) are very well known and are
almost household tunes in the North. Similarly the Pasurams of Andal and devotional
compositions of Karikkal Ammaiyar are equally popular in the South. Of these two
saintesses, Andal has a greater number of worshippers.
The legend behind Andal's birth is shrouded in
mystery. Her spiritual descent is traced back to Sri Devi, the Universal Goddess. God, the
Divine King, is symbolically provided with three queens. They are Sri, Bhoo and Nila. Sri
is the Universal Mother and holds sway over both the spiritual plane, Nityavibhuti, and
the material plane, Lilavibhuti.
