VIDYARANYA'S IMPACT

Among the celebrated pontiffs who held this pitha's banner aloft, Vidyaranya is a multi-faceted diamond, and his tenure has a characteristic aroma that enveloped the whole of Dhakshinapatha and elevated millions of billions of Hindus with the aid of royal hands of imperial brand at his behest. It happened thus - Hakka and Bukka, the valorous sons of Sangama, a local chicftain witnessed an extraordinary phenomenon of a hare chasing, hounds during their hunting expedition in this region. Wondering at it, they met Vidyaranyaswamy and sought his clarification. Envisioning the glory of the kshetra exuding valour-kshetra from its very inch, the Swamiji advised them to lay foundation for a great Hindu empire at this place which alone could act as a bulwark against the onrush of alien culture. Convinced, they at once launched the nation building enterprise under his guidance. Unsparingly he put his spiritual wealth, literary brilliance and versatile scholarship to the building: of an empire, when he was made the worshipful minister by the founders, who named the city Vidyanagar, built then, which later became Vijayanagar.
