THE
ADVAITHAMATHA PITHA
The
birth of Sankara Bhagavatpada heralded a new epoch in the history of Hindu
religion. Jainism and Buddhism drawing sustenance from the ruling princes
started encompassing the world with such tenacious avidity and vindictive
ferocity that they engulfed Hinduism and emptied its rich contents. To breathe
life into that withering Aryasamskriti, Adi Sankara decided to establish
Vidyapithas in the four corner's of our Punya Bharat. His extensive paryatana
across the whole of Bharata, for selection of places brought him once to this
holy spot, an integral part of the western ghats. Situated just at the foot of
the hallowed Rishyasringa Hills, right in front of the holy Tungabhadra, flowing
coiled around the majestic tall coconut and arecanut groves, soaring with their
startling straightness to reach the high heavens, as it were, piercing through
the stately colourful clouds, this sublime spot attracted him most. With his
intuitive powers, he learnt with infinite joy, its spiritual past due to
habitation and association of Rishyasringa, and at once embarked upon
establishing the Adwaithamatapita for religious regeneration and spiritual
glorification, the urgent need of the day.
