Unlike
the political level, where restraint is generally a virtue, in the
religious domain Hindus need not be reticent. They have already been
too hesitant to take a stand and for too long. They must speak out
with a moral force and use all the tools of the mind and media that
are available today. They must expose the difference between
Christian and Islamic rhetoric of tolerance and the aggression of
their conversion efforts not only in India but all over the world.
They should seek to save the indigenous religions
the same way that ecological groups are trying to save vanishing
species. In short, on a
religious level Hindus must arouse and awaken people and help
humanity in this time of great confusion and destruction. While
Hindus, like all peoples, must be flexible on a political level,
they need not compromise the truth of their religion in order to do
so. In making outward adaptations they should not water down their
inner principles.
On the contrary, Hindus should return
to their Vedic values and project these as force to uplift all
humanity. They need to provide not only a Hindu critique but also a
Hindu alternative in religion and culture, not simply to defend
their tradition but to show a higher way of life. |
